Spellbrook C of E Primary School

Learn together, Enjoy together, Succeed together

Letter from Mrs Cook

In light of the current situation and to help with keeping your child’s learning active at home, I have put together a pack of SATs papers/ revision activities for home learning for your child.

Project

We would like the children to complete and carry out a research project as part of their time away from school. In science, we have been finding out about living things and their habitats. We have begun finding out about famous naturalists such as David Attenborough. Your child can choose how they would like to present their project. This could be written or completed on a computer. The following are to be included:

  • Choose a famous naturalist of your choice (e.g. David Attenborough / Jane Goodall)
  • Find out how they became an expert in their field
  • Why they became interested in this area of science
  • Details of their lives
  • Significant discoveries or research they have been involved in
  • What impact / recognition they have had in the wider world
  • Anything else you think would be informative

There are many companies who are now offering free subscriptions and resources for home learning:

The Ten for Ten Easter booklets are not designed to be completed all in one go – the idea is that the children complete the Ten for Ten one activity a day.  These can then be marked by your child with an adult once they have completed each one.

There is a set of the maths 2016 SATs papers (arithmetic and two reasoning) and each one can be marked by yourself at the end. Ideally these should be completed in the timescales of the tests to help children gauge their speed of work. The arithmetic paper is 30 minutes and the two reasoning are 40 minutes each. The mark scheme for these is papers can be found at the following link:

To save paper there is a CGP site (https://www.cgpbooks.co.uk/resources/ks2-sats-online-10-minute-tests ) that the children can access maths and SPaG tests too which link with the CGP revision guides that I suggested at the SATs parents meeting.

White Rose Maths provide excellent resources on their website for free and work alongside Power Maths that we teach in school. (https://whiterosemaths.com/).

The children have log ins to Purple Mash which they can access from home and this is useful for times tables practise and other activities which they would like to do.  I have set ‘To do’s’ which the children can access across a range of topics. The Year 5 activities are also for Year 6 as they are revision for them.

BBC Bitesize also is a fantastic website for revision – make sure you access the KS2 resources. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/zbr9wmn)

Scholastic have resources and videos etc. to support home learning free of charge also providing up to 20 days worth of home learning activities: https://www.scholastic.com/parents/school-success/home-learning-resources.html. You need to click on Grade 3-5.

Twinkl have given out a code that you can access which will provide free resources which you can download for your child. There are reading paper practise tests which focus on three mark questions and a range of activity mats too for quick revision for SPaG and maths although I have printed of a set of maths ones included in this pack.

www.twinkl.co.uk/offer and the code is UKTWINKLHELPS

Please can you encourage your child to continue to read daily as this is such a huge part of their continued learning. They also have statutory spellings and spelling rules which they can continue to be practicing.

I have given your child a diary which they can complete daily to keep their writing going too.

Hopefully this will all be of use and I will keep you up to date with additional work and resources as required.

Kind regards,

Mrs Sarah Cook
