Modern Foreign Language - French

Intent

Broad

  • To cover the National Curriculum programmes of study and outcomes.
  • Pupils will be taught to express their ideas and thoughts in another language (French) and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and writing.
  • Pupils will receive a high-quality language education which fosters pupil’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.
  • A range of opportunities are provided to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking.
  • Links may be made with other areas of the curriculum to enhance pupils learning and enrichment gained from links with other schools in French speaking countries.

Balanced

  • French is taught as a discreet subject across KS2 for half an hour each week.
  • Pupils are taught to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they are continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

Progressive

  • French is taught using the Salut! scheme of work whereby each lesson builds on learning new vocabulary and reviewing previously learnt vocabulary and grammar.

Cumulative

  • Knowledge is revisited and skills developed by repetition and reinforcement in use with other curriculum areas as pupils progress through the school.
  • In addition, pupils are taught songs and play games which embeds their learning.
  • The writing tasks support their speaking and listening skills alongside grammar.

Inclusive

  • Our French curriculum is designed so that all pupils can and should receive their entitlement to be able develop their understanding and learning of a foreign language.
  • Those working towards expectations will work on the same tasks but may need greater support and may not complete all levels of an activity. They may choose to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding orally or visually, to avoid limited literacy skills hindering their achievements within the subject.
  • Salut! includes frequent opportunities for pupils to work together to discuss ideas and feed back as a whole class through games, songs and stories.
  • Pupils working above expectations are expected and encouraged to undertake activities with greater independence.

Implementation

  • In KS2, each class has a timetabled French lesson of 30 minutes per week which uses the Salut! scheme of work.
  • Children are taught to listen attentively to spoken language and respond, as well as developing these skills
  • Pupils will make links with children in France, with regular correspondence taking place.
  • Children develop an appreciation of a variety of stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French that are delivered throughout the curriculum.
  • French Day will enable the whole school to be immersed in the inclusion of the culture and use the language meaningfully in context.
  • Every child accesses all subjects on offer at our school. Teachers plan French with clear progression of skills and knowledge to ensure that all children access it at an age-appropriate level.

Impact

  • KS2, children’s written work is recorded in a designated French folder.
  • Knowledge is assessed through the use of formative assessment in lessons alongside the use of Key Performance Indicators on Target Tracker.
  • Attainment is recorded on Target tracker twice a year (February and end of school year).
  • Children are learning to work both independently and as part of a group, ensuring skills of resilience and teamwork are promoted in this subject.
  • Children are enthused and engaged in the wide variety of activities they learn French through different activities.
